Jimmy Cliff - Cliff Hanger

Jimmy Cliff (born James Chambers, 1 April 1948, Somerton District, St. James, Jamaica is a Jamaican ska and reggae singer, musician and actor. He is the only currently living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest possible honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences. He is best known among mainstream audiences for songs such as "Sittin' in Limbo", "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "Many Rivers to Cross" from the soundtrack to The Harder They Come which helped popularize reggae across the world his cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" from the film, Cool Runnings. Outside of the reggae world, he is probably best known for his film appearance in The Harder They Come. Even after a string of hits, the singer has never quite managed to achieve mainstream acceptance, although in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he seemed poised for international stardom.During the 1981 River Tour, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band added Cliff's little-known song "Trapped" to their live set; it achieved great prominence when included on 1985's We Are the World benefit album). The follow-up, Cliff Hanger (1985) won a Grammy Award for 'Best Reggae Album', though it was his last major success in the U.S. until 1993.

UB40 - Xtended Mix & Remixs

UB40's fortunes changed at the beginning of 1980. They had spent many years performing live and developing a name for themselves when they were asked to join 'The Pretenders' as their support act on a national tour. Because they were from the West Midlands, and because they were a large multi cultural group playing music of Jamaican origin, UB40 were initially thought to be part of the Two-Tone phenomenon which had burst out of nearby Coventry. Two tone music took its roots from Caribbean Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae. It was honed into the multi-racial sound of 2-Tone by bands such as The Specials and The Selecter - both of which came from Coventry. For over twenty five years, UB40 have continued the job of popularising reggae around the globe. In the process, they continue to give enormous pleasure to a public too vast to be defined by age, generation tribe or fashion.

Aswad - Cool Summer

The original members of Aswad were Brinsley Forde, George Oban, Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, and Donald Griffiths. Courtney Hemmings was a frequent contributor in the 1970s, including as part of the backing band on Burning Spear's 1977 Live album, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London. Other contributors included Vin Gordon, Bongo Levi, and Karl Pitterson. They became one the UK's top reggae bands with songs, typical of the time, about the oppression of black youth, such as "Three Babylon" and "It's Not Our Wish", and the powerful jazz-influenced instrumental "Warrior Charge" (full versions of these available on the Showcase album). 'Cool Summer Reggae' contains the UK reggae act's first new recordings since 1999's 'Roots Revival'. Alongside re-recordings of their hits such as 'Don't Turn Around' and 'Shine', they turn their hand to material originally performed by acts such as Crowded House, Toploader and The Police. Former Eternal star, Easther Bennett, joins them to perform lead vocals on 'Shy Guy'.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Babylon By Bus

Babylon By Bus is a live album released by Bob Marley & The Wailers in 1978. The album was recorded mostly at the Pavillon de Paris in June 1978, during the Kaya Tour. Like the 1973 album Catch A Fire, the first release had something of a novelty cover. The windows of the bus on the front cover were cut out, revealing part of the inner sleeve. Herbs - The Best Of

Taking a commercial reggae-meets-rock base, the ever revolving musical cast that was the Herbs were the first genuinely successful band to credibly assimilate the rhythm, spirituality and political consciousness of Polynesia into their 'pop' sound. Providing inspiration to numerous others to stamp the sound of Pacifica on their work, the Herbs established a blueprint for Polynesian pop/rock which continues to develop today with the likes of Che Fu, TrinityRoots and numerous others. Another fine piece of local music history that deserves your attention.

Bitty Mclean - It Keeps Rainin (Tears From My Eyes)

Warm and gentle vocal style and classic lovers rock approach to his material, Britain's Bitty McLean was somewhat of an antidote to the phobic slack attitude of much of dancehall reggae in the mid-'90s, and if this made him appear at the time like a lightweight on the scene, he stuck to the high road. The result, as is refreshing in its classic clarity of vision. Fats Domino's "It Keeps Rainin'," approach makes him somewhat of a throwback in a hip-hop dancehall world, but it also gives his material an instant nostalgic familiarity. Steve Leggett
