Jodeci - Forever My Lady

1991, Jodeci released their debut album, Forever My Lady, which included the singles "Gotta Love", "Forever My Lady", "Stay", "Come and Talk To Me", and "I'm Still Waiting". Three of these singles hit #1 on the R&B charts and the album sold over three million copies. Jodeci won an American Music Award for Come and Talk to Me. On most of the tracks on Forever My Lady and subsequent releases by the group, K-Ci and Jo-Jo share lead vocals, and all four members contribute backgrounds. DeVante and Uptown labelmate Al B. Sure! produced the album, while DeVante wrote every song with help from K-Ci on "Gotta Love" and Al B. Sure! on the title track. K-Ci and Jo-Jo also worked with Al B. as background vocalists when Al B. and Kyle West produced a few tracks on T.E.V.I.N., Tevin Campbell's debut LP. DeVante went on to co-produce tracks on Al B.'s Sexy Versus album in 1992.

JODECI - FOREVER MY LADY

Nuttin Nyce - Down 4 Whateva

In 1993 (October 12th), Jive records released the Club/Dance ready/new jack swing-ish Down 4 Whateva; a vocal trio leaded by Contemporary R&B singer Eboni Foster. Formed in 1992 in California, the three vocalists debut album, Down 4 Whateva, striked No. 10 on the Heatseakers chart and No. 34 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The trio simply had nothing new or good to offer R&B music in the early-'90s, an era of music dominated by the likes of Jodeci, TLC, En Vogue, SWV, Boyz II Men, and Tony Toni Tone. Knowing that the trio's vocal talents weren't as good as En Vogue or beats weren't as chart intended as TLC's Ooooooohhh...On the TLC Tip, Nuttin' Nyce's debut does have a lot going for it. Former Boogie Down Productions member D-Nice contributes his producing skills, while Hi-Five is featured on the new jack-styled "What Can I Say to You (To Justify My Love)" and little-known rapper Mr. Lee (specialized in a style known as "hip-house"-the art of rapping to dance-oriented house-music tracks) shows off his Bass, Drum Machine, Programming, Producing, Vocal Arrangement, Drum Programming, and Mixing skills. The title track, which appears on the soundtrack to A Low Down Dirty Shame, is the albums most memorable tune, but other released singles like "In My Nature" "Froggy Style" "Proof Is in the Pudding" "Nasty Girl" and "What Can I Say to You (To Justify My Love)" prove to be just as pleasant as the title track and follow the same formula, tight samples, new jack hooks, and sex oriented lyrics. Though, Nuttin' Nyce failed to generate a lot of hype, Down 4 Whateva remains a new jack favorite to die hard fans, and, unfortunately, the trio would never get the chance to record a follow-up album.

Kut Klose - I Like

Kut Klose was a R&B trio that formed in Atlanta, Georgia. The three female singers that made up the group were Athena Cage, Lavonn Battle and Tabitha Duncan. The girls were discovered by Keith Sweat who produced their debut album. He also sang a duet with the group on "Get Up On It." In 1995, the girls released their first and only album, Surrender. Despite releasing three singles, "Surrender," "Lovely Thang," and "I Like" the only one to make a significant impact was "I Like", which managed to reach #8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Guy - Guy

Teddy Riley a mastermind for creating what would become one of the most popular sounds in R&B history, New Jack. Guy's self-titled debut is where that sound generated from. With their hits from this album which included "I Like", "Groove Me" and "Piece of My Love", there is no wonder why this sound became as popular as it did; the public just ate it up. This album is filled with songs that you can dance to and also resurface a slew of positive memories. In fact, the vast majority of these numbers are fast in tempo. Teddy Riley seemed to focus more so on the production of this album than the lyrics. What makes me say that? Well, some of the songs don't have many lyrics, but all of the tracks are very experimental (especially for that time, circa 1988). This album sounds dated from start to finish, but that doesn't necessarily serve as a problem because times do change, and believe me, The "New Jack" era had its heyday.

SWV - The Remixes

Now this is what R and B should sound like. It's all about the Demolition mix here of "Right Here". The original remix by Teddy Riley is taken one step further, instead of using the backing to "Human Nature" the mix has also been fused with verses and chorus' from "Human Nature" too. Making it more of a duet. The result is quite awesome, and what should be a modern R and B classic. The tune anyway is superb, Teddy Riley made it better, and this Demolition mix takes it to the next level.

Lost Boyz - Love Peace & Nappiness

The Lost Boyz' second album, Love, Peace & Nappiness, finds the group adding touches of reggae and ragga to its hard-edged hip-hop. The deeper production -- thick bass, echoing beats, and keyboards -- makes Love, Peace & Nappiness more sonically intriguing than the average rap album, but the Lost Boyz occasionally struggle for material, leaving the record a fitfully enjoyable listen.

N.W.A. - 100 Miles And Running

The title track "100 Miles and Runnin' was the group's first track to gain radio airtime and appear on TV with its music video. Dr. Dre, who had just finished working with The D.O.C. and Above the Law, added atypical funky beats and the slow synth groove on "Just Don't Bite It". A sadistic parody of the police on a skit featuring The D.O.C. from the group's 1-900 hotline introduces "Sa Prize, Pt. 2", a sequel to the controversial "Fuck tha Police" originally off of the Straight Outta Compton album. MC Ren and The D.O.C. wrote the lyrics for Eazy-E and Dr. Dre.

OST The Five Heartbeats

The soundtrack of the 1991 Fox/Robert Townsend film about the travails of a fictional '60s soul music vocal group includes the hit ballad "A House Is Not a Home" performed by The Dells, whom Townsend consulted with on the film. Lead singer Marvin Junior, one of the most underrated voices in pop music, poignantly delivers the melancholy lyrics. After 7 had a Top 10 R&B smash with the smooth as silk "Nights Like This." There's plenty of retro touches on the album. "Baby Stop Running Around" has Temptations-ish James Jamerson-inspired bassline.

Herbs - The Best Of

Taking a commercial reggae-meets-rock base, the ever revolving musical cast that was the Herbs were the first genuinely successful band to credibly assimilate the rhythm, spirituality and political consciousness of Polynesia into their 'pop' sound. Providing inspiration to numerous others to stamp the sound of Pacifica on their work, the Herbs established a blueprint for Polynesian pop/rock which continues to develop today with the likes of Che Fu, TrinityRoots and numerous others. Another fine piece of local music history that deserves your attention.

DRS - Gansta Lean The Album

DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) realesed the CD Gangsta Lean, everyone called it Ganksta R&B, Cuz these guys are sick! The big hit single "Gangsta Lean" was a big hit and its a soft tune about the struggles of losing a homie in Los Angeles. Then the song "Strip," that has the BBD (Bell Biv Devoe) new jack swing dance feel to it is a great song with some intense lyrics. But nothin' compared to the sick "Sickness," this song is as sick as it gets, DRS basically saying I got a problem with killing women, they say "I'll put my nine in between your legs and Pull the Muthaphuccing trigga." "Scoundrels Get Lonely," is a great song and it was a hit as well. Favorite song has to be "Mama Didn't Raise No Punk," which has a sample of Dr. Dre's "Deep Cover." If you don't like R&B and your a str8 up gangsta rap fan, you'll love this cd. DRS is everythang but R&B.

New Edition - Under The Blue Moon

Changes were on the horizon for New Edition. They had become enormously successful by aping the Jackson 5, but were undergoing internal trauma as original member Bobby Brown bolted amid rumors of dissatisfaction with the group's direction. Under the Blue Moon featured their covers of '50s and '60s standards and was among early examples of the retro trend now so prominent in urban contemporary camps. While they didn't do this type of material nearly as well as the Force M.D.'s, they at least brought fresh attention to such songs as "Earth Angel" and "Tears on My Pillow." Ron Wynn

Freddie Jackson - The Greatest Hits Of

During his five-album stay at Capitol, Freddie Jackson repeatedly showed himself to be a soul man of unusual merit. Ranging from outstanding to decent, all five of his Capitol albums are worth owning. But if a listener is allotted only one Jackson CD, The Greatest Hits of Freddie Jackson is the logical choice. From "Rock Me Tonight," "Nice & Slow," and "Tasty Love" to "I Could Use a Little Love (Right Now)" and "Jam Tonight," all of the essential Jackson material is included. The CD does a fine job of summarizing Jackson's accomplishments at Capitol and proves that his extremely devoted following is well deserved. Alex Henderson

Wu-Tang - Enter The Wu-Tang 36 Chambers

This debut revolutionized hip-hop (and launched half a dozen solo careers), as much for The RZA's raw barrage of off-kilter, off-key loops and sound effects as for its elliptically violent lyrics. Martial arts at least as they appear in kung fu movies--are the Wu-Tang Clan's favorite metaphor, but they're also the organizing principle of the group, a crowd of eight rappers, each with his own way-out-there "fighting style." They created their own little self-contained culture, with its own symbols and shifting identities, and let listeners figure it out for themselves. Unless you're willing to immerse yourself in its world, it can be baffling and a little dry, but its aggression and originality are undeniable. Douglas Wolk

OST Players Club

The soundtrack to Ice Cube's directorial debut, The Players Club (a Cube-written drama about a young woman trying to complete college by stripping in a "gentlemen's club"), was the first release on his Heavyweight Records label, a subsidiary of A&M Records. Appropriately, the album has all the makings of a big deal, featuring a terrific single from Cube, "We Be Clubbin'," plus new tracks from Brownstone, Mia X, K-Ci & Jo-Jo, Changing Faces, Kurupt, Rufus Blaq featuring Spinderella, and a duet between Master P and Ice Cube, as well as Cube working with Scarface and Mack 10. If you're familiar with the names, you'll realize that many of the cuts on the album were made in collaboration with soldiers of Master P's No Limit army, and all of The Players Club has a bass-heavy, deep groove, which works appropriately for a movie about strippers, after all. There are a few weak moments on the album, but overall, it sets a mood and sustains it, resulting in a thick, funky contemporary hip-hop record that's thoroughly enjoyable. Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Candy Man - Aint No Shame In My Game

When a rapper does well in the R&B or pop markets, hip-hop's hardcore tends to view the artist with suspicion, however strong his or her rapping skills might be. That was exactly what happened to Candyman when "Knockin' Boots" (a catchy single that sampled Betty Wright's "Tonight Is the Night") enjoyed considerable crossover action. Some hardcore rappers questioned Candyman's legitimacy, but make no mistake: Ain't No Shame in My Game proves that the Angeleno's rapping skills are solid. While this decent debut album has its share of lighthearted R&B-flavored fare (including "Playin' on Me," "Melt in Your Mouth," and of course, "Knockin' Boots"), more aggressive, in-your-face tunes like "Today's Topic," "5 Verses of Def," and "The Mack Is Back" demonstrate that Candyman has no problem handling hardcore b-boy rap. The overall result is a generally likable, if a bit uneven, album. Alex Henderson

Bitty Mclean - It Keeps Rainin (Tears From My Eyes)

Warm and gentle vocal style and classic lovers rock approach to his material, Britain's Bitty McLean was somewhat of an antidote to the phobic slack attitude of much of dancehall reggae in the mid-'90s, and if this made him appear at the time like a lightweight on the scene, he stuck to the high road. The result, as is refreshing in its classic clarity of vision. Fats Domino's "It Keeps Rainin'," approach makes him somewhat of a throwback in a hip-hop dancehall world, but it also gives his material an instant nostalgic familiarity. Steve Leggett

Eddie F & The Untouchables - Lets Get It On The Album

Eddie "DJ Eddie F." Ferrell came out with a very good compilation back in late '94 called "Let's Get It On". This came out on motown records at a time when motown was starting to make a transition into the Andre Harrell era who was the president of Uptown records(affilated with MCA records) at the time and the marketing direction was very poor. Eddie F assembled an entourage of producers and songwriters to form the "Untouchables" which has put out some major hits from acts such as Mary J. Blige, TLC, Heavy D. & The Boyz, Intro, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, & more. The album starts off with Intro with a great slow jam called "Never Again" in which I thought when this song came out, I instantly thought that Intro was going to release a new album but it was from this compilation. The next song "Let Go" by Felicia Adams could easily be a neo-soul hit today with its hip hop beat and Felicia's soulful voice. Andre Wilson(related to Gap Band great Charlie Wilson) had a great hip hop love cut called "Had Enough" which uses great excerpts of "Ladi Dodi" Doug E. Fresh/Slick Rick & "Top Billin" by Audio Two. My favorite cut on here is the title track "Let's Get It On" which features Heavy D., Grand Puba, and the late Tupac Shakur & Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace. What makes this song good is that is not any hooks, it just get straight to the lyrics and thats it. Some other artists of note to check out is Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Changing Faces, Myko Myers, & Todd-O. Overall a good album but once again it did not receive a lot of attention and even to this day with an album with 2Pac & Biggie in same song should not go unnoticed. Amazon
