He was discovered at a New Edition concert in California in the mid-1980s when one of the members asked him to come up on stage and sing with them. After his initial nervousness on stage, he decided this was the career route he wanted to take. A few years later, in 1988, Suave released his first single, "My Girl," as well as an album, I'm Your Playmate. The single rose to #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #22 on the Radio & Records Pop Chart.
A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male.
His debut album was 1989's Just a Poet With a Soul, which won critical acclaim for sociopolitical lyrics and original beats. Lisa Lisa the Cult Jam were one of the original American freestyle music groups of the 1980s. Their second album, Spanish Fly, was a huge success in 1987. It spawned two #1 pop hits, "Head to Toe" and "Lost In Emotion", both of which went gold and both of which sported a retro Motown flavor mixed with the Freestyle sound they were known for. "Head to Toe" also parked at #1 R&B for two weeks, and with its strong Mary Wells influence, "Lost in Emotion" did as well.Spanish Fly went platinum, peaking at #7 on the album chart. Other singles from the album were the ballad "Someone to Love Me for Me" b/w "Spanish Fly" (#7 R&B), "Everything Will B-Fine" (#9 R&B).

Bernard Jackson moved from Stamford, Connecticut to New York to pursue a music career. While in New York, his godfather said Jackson should contact his nephew David Townsend who had been a guitarist with The Isley Brothers. Meanwhile, Townsend was in Port Authority, a 1970s band, and met David Conley. Conley and Townsend started writing and when they met Jackson, they formed a band.In 1986, Jackson met with a friend Brian Simpson and recorded a demo tape of a track he had written, "The First Time." He believed it to be a hit and hired a recording studio to get the best professional conditions for the track. As the first single for the group's third album, 3 Deep in 1991, Jackson was right. The song was a big hit, going gold and becoming the group's biggest hit to date. It topped both the R&B and pop charts. The album continued on with "All I Want Is You" which reached #8 on the R&B charts and helped the album go gold.

New Edition’s third album, All for Love, was released in the latter half of 1985. Despite having a slightly less bubblegum feel than their previous albums and featuring somewhat more mature songs such as "Whispers In Bed", and while not duplicating the success of its predecessor, the album was certified platinum. The album spawned the hits: “Count Me Out,” “A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes),” and “With You All The Way.” The growing popularity of the group led to a guest appearance (as themselves) in the 1985 film Krush Groove, performing "My Secret.”
Due to financial reasons, New Edition parted company with Starr in 1984 (Starr responded by promptly creating the group New Kids on the Block; essentially formatted after New Edition.) The group, meanwhile, went on to sign a major label deal with MCA Records, which released their self titled second album the same year. Eclipsing their debut album, New Edition spun off the top five hit “Cool It Now” and the top twenty “Mr. Telephone Man,” and went on to be certified double platinum in the United States.
Their success led to the creation of late-1980s and 1990s boy bands like New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. Candy Girl,recorded in late 1982 and released in 1983, on Starr’s Streetwise Records, the album featured the hits: “Is This The End,” “Popcorn Love,” “Jealous Girl” and the title track, which went to number one in both the American R&B singles chart and the UK singles chart.
Terry landed backup singing jobs for the R&B/pop group Sweet Sensation and hip-hop group The Boogie Boys. In 1987, he signed a record deal with Epic/CBS Records. Terry's first single, "She's Fly", was released the same year, and peaked at number 10 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart. Forever Yours, Terry's debut album for Epic, was released in 1988, and reached the Top 30 of Billboard's R&B albums chart. The follow-up single, "Lovey Dovey", hit number-four on the R&B charts. The single Forever Yours reached the R&B Top 20.
The Pasadenas are a Rhythm & Blues / Pop formation from the United Kingdom, best known for their hit song "Tribute (Right On)". A vocal group firmly focused on the music and artists from earlier decades, their music was heavily influenced by 1950s Doo-wop, 1960s Motown, and early 1970s Funk and R&B. The band was not given much attention in America, but they were briefly stars in their native country.The group scored a big UK #5 hit in 1988 with its initial release, "Tribute (Right On)", which paid homage to soul luminaries such as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. They released a companion album, To Whom It May Concern. In addition to "Tribute", the disc included the minor hit "Riding on a Train", and a version of The Chi-Lites’ "Living In the Footsteps of Another Man". They had several follow-up hits as well, including "Love Thing" (UK #22) in 1990.
4 The Cause hit the charts with a remake / remix cover of Ben E King's “Stand By Me” in 1998. The song was a Number-1-Hit in parts of the globe.They are a family group from Chicago whose follow-up singles did not reach the same level as their breakthrough single. Times Two was an American male duo of vocalists/keyboardists that wrote most of their own material. Times Two were Shanti Jones and Johnny Dollar, both from Point Reyes, California. They had a hit with a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel song, "Cecilia". It reached number one in several countries in 1988.Their 1988 album, X2, reached #137 on the Billboard 200. In the U.S., their biggest hit was "Strange But True", which peaked at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988. In 1990, the band released a follow-up EP called "Danger Is My Business" and a new single, "Set Me Free." Neither made any impact on the charts. Also in 1988, Doug Breitbart signed Times Two as the opening act for Debbie Gibson's Out of the Blue Tour.
The original members of Aswad were Brinsley Forde, George Oban, Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, and Donald Griffiths. Courtney Hemmings was a frequent contributor in the 1970s, including as part of the backing band on Burning Spear's 1977 Live album, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London. Other contributors included Vin Gordon, Bongo Levi, and Karl Pitterson. They became one the UK's top reggae bands with songs, typical of the time, about the oppression of black youth, such as "Three Babylon" and "It's Not Our Wish", and the powerful jazz-influenced instrumental "Warrior Charge" (full versions of these available on the Showcase album). 'Cool Summer Reggae' contains the UK reggae act's first new recordings since 1999's 'Roots Revival'. Alongside re-recordings of their hits such as 'Don't Turn Around' and 'Shine', they turn their hand to material originally performed by acts such as Crowded House, Toploader and The Police. Former Eternal star, Easther Bennett, joins them to perform lead vocals on 'Shy Guy'.
4-Tay made his debut on the Too $hort album Life Is...Too Short, but was arrested sometime after his 21st birthday on drug charges and served 8 months in prison. Upon his release from prison he issued Rappin' 4-Tay Is Back in 1992, and followed up in 1994 with Don't Fight the Feeling, recorded in West Oakland at Grafitti Tunes with producer/songwriter Cyrus Esteban. "Don't Fight the Feeling" produced the hits "Playaz Club" (which sampled the song "Private Number" by William Bell and Judy Clay and hit #36 on the Billboard Hot 100), the "Dank Season" featuring Seff Tha Gaffla and "I'll Be Around" (which hit #39 on the Billboard Hot 100). Rappin' 4-Tay's mainstream success has been scarce since then, but he was featured in 2Pac's All Eyez on Me album on the single "Only God Can Judge Me" in 1996 and Master P's West Coast Bad Boyz II compilation in 1997. 4-Tay was also an original member of Bay Area supergroup T.W.D.Y. in 1999. In 2003 Rappin' 4-Tay released the album Gangsta Gumbo with the single "Burning, Burning", followed up by the album That's What You Thought in 2007.
Sweat started his musical career as a member of a well known Harlem band called "Jamilah" in 1975. With the help of Jamilah, Sweat was able to hone his craft as a lead singer by performing regionally throughout the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The group was started by Larry Peoples, a talented bass player from 116th Street and Lenox Avenue, Michael Samuels, guitarist out of the Bronx, and drummer Walter Bradley from 125th in Harlem. Additional members of the group included Peter DaCosta, vocals, Joseph McGeachy, sax, Dwight Banks, trumpet and Kenneth Varner, keyboards. On November 25, 1987, Sweat released his debut album Make It Last Forever, which sold three million copies. The biggest hit from this album was "I Want Her" (#1 R&B/#5 Pop), and the title track from the album hit #2 on the R&B charts. Sweat continued to chart fairly well with his second album I'll Give All My Love to You, which hit #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, and Keep It Comin' debuted in the Top 20 of the album chart. It did not sell as well because Keith did not promote the album. The big singles were "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again" from New Jack City, "Why Me Baby" (featuring LL Cool J) and the title track. Keith was moving from New York to Atlanta, and he was starting his Keia Records label that would feature Silk & Kut Klose.
Anthony Ray (born August 12, 1963), better known by his stage name Sir Mix-a-Lot is a rapper and producer from Seattle, Washington. He is best known for his song "Baby Got Back". His first hit, released on Nastymix Records in 1988, was the single "Posse on Broadway" giving some the impression that he was a New Yorker. The reference was actually to the street of the same name on Seattle's Capitol Hill. The song contains a sample from David Bowie's 1975 hit "Fame". Other popular hits include "Buttermilk Biscuits" (1988), "Square Dance Rap" (1988), "Beepers" (1989), "My Hooptie" (1990) a song about a car in disrepair and "Jump On It" (1996). Sir Mix-a-Lot has tended to write, arrange, program, perform, and produce his own music. His best-known song is the Miami Bass styled song "Baby Got Back" (1992), a number one hit that won him fame and the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The single has since been parodied many times and is usually played in irony, celebrated for its over-the-top nature. A hook from the title song of his 1988 release Swass is finding a new audience with the success of The Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha".
The group, originally comprised of then adolescent; Aqil Davidson, Brandon Mitchell, Markell Riley, and Keith "K.C." Hanns, was formed around 1988 as Wrecks-n-Effect. Their first release, an eponymous EP of six tracks for Atlantic Records, included the singles "Go For What You Know", "Let's Do It Again" (which sampled The Staple Singers hit song), and a self-titled track sampling Jimmy Castor's "Bertha Butt Boogie". They received little promotion from Atlantic however, and, with the help of one-time manager and alleged gangster Gene Griffin, jumped ship for Motown Records. When they released their self-titled debut album the following year, "K.C." had left and the group had become a trio. Wrecks-N-Effect was produced by producer/songwriter Teddy Riley (brother of Markell Riley), and rapper/producer Redhead Kingpin; reached #16 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #103 on The Billboard Top 200 chart, while its singles "Juicy" and "New Jack Swing" met a similar fate with the exception of "New Jack Swing" becoming a #1 single on the Billboard Rap chart. Tragically, Mitchell was killed in a shooting incident shortly after its release in 1990. The group, now a duo of Aqil Davison and Markell Riley, changed the spelling of their name from Wrecks-n-Effect to Wreckx-n-Effect (the "X" symbolizing the loss of Mitchell) and followed up their first self titled album with 1992's Hard or Smooth on MCA Records. Hard or Smooth fared far better than their debut, selling just under 2 million copies and reaching #9 on the Billboard Top 200 and #6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Chaka Demus & Pliers are a Jamaican reggae duo made up of deejay Chaka Demus, and singer Pliers. Both artists were established musicians when they teamed up, and earned international recognition in the early 1990s. They were the first Jamaican act to have three consecutive top five hits on the UK Singles Chart; a record unsurpassed until Shaggy scored four consecutive top five hits in 2001. Pliers is one of the Bonner brothers, all of whom are reggae artists, including Richie Spice, Spanner Banner and Mikey Spice.
Flip da Scrip are a Dutch formation, founded in 1990 by the rapper Cooly D (real name Stef Bruinsma). He and the rapper Glaze released their first album "Products Of Da Piemel" in 1993. Their first big hits were the two singles "Who's In Da House" and "Throw Ya Hands In The Air". They became so succesful in their home country, they were able to become the support act for R. Kelly's tour in The Netherlands. Seeing their home town of Enschede is very close to Germany the duo could easily expand its market and they got signed by the German label Dos Or Die/Nightown Records. The following years they brought out more Hip Hop and R&B hits like "You To Me" and "You Can Run". They also performed at the annual Dome festival in Cologne, together with top acts as Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and DJ Quicksilver. In 1997, Glaze left the group for a solo career. Later that year, the group got new members: the rapper Bear and the singers Winston and Crucial. Their first single with this new setting, "I Never Told You", is probably their most famous one as it became a huge hit all over Europe.

TROOP is an R&B group from Pasadena, California. TROOP has had four number one singles and ten top ten singles on the Billboard R&B Charts. They have also completed five albums, which include three certified gold and one certified platinum album. TROOP is an acronym for "Total Respect Of Other People". TROOP released Attitude, which included songs such as Spread My Wings and All I Do is Think of You (a Jackson 5 cover), which were both #1 on the Billboard R&B charts and remained in the top 10 on the charts for several weeks. Attitude was certified platinum in 1990, afterward, TROOP released their third album Deepa in 1992 from which the single Sweet November made #1 on the Billboard's R&B charts. The group followed up with two more albums "A Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin'" (1994) and "Mayday" (1998), both of which were re-released in 2005.
